06-Burbank Goes Wild

The opposite of a manicured design, our garden is a wild, unhinged beauty, a fragrant and colorful explosion of life. When we removed the lawn in 2021, I envisioned walking narrow paths through a mysterious meadow of shrubs to reach my writing studio. We knew zero about native plants, so we picked a bunch that sounded fun, and interplanted with fruit trees and drought-tolerant herbs on hügelkulturs. Four years later, we’ve learned a lot. We’ve lost plants, discovered new ones. The paths keep shifting. It’s not a perfect place. It’s somewhere to love, and experiment; a source of inspiration, and awe.
