09-Justice Tujunga Garden

The garden began in 2014 in the midst of a prolonged drought, to replace a water-guzzling lawn and ivy-covered slopes while creating defensible space in a fire zone. We set out to evoke a classic mid-century suburban landscape, but with plants more congenial to our unique environment. As some things thrive and others dwindle, we let the plants be our teachers, with nature and a bit of experimentation winnowing the palette into its current eclectic form. Local natives mix with Channel Island species, and lemons and herbs for the kitchen. Dudleya and other succulents in pots dress the patios, while the flowers, seeds, and two fountains attract a constant parade of birds and other wildlife.
