About the Garden

Faced with drought, a water-guzzling lawn, ivy-covered slopes, and a need for defensible space in a fire zone when we moved here in 2014, we set out to evoke a classic mid-century suburban landscape using natives. As some plants thrive and others dwindle, the palette has been winnowed by nature and constant experimentation into its current eclectic form. The plants teach me what to do. Local natives mix with Channel Island species alongside lemons and herbs for the kitchen. Potted dudleya and other succulents enliven patios, while the garden and its two fountains attract a constant parade of birds and other wildlife.
