The turf, ornamentals, and invasives are gone. Where they once were, over 2,000 square feet of layered coastal scrub and chaparral natives now thrive. Maintained with a light touch, our yard was designed for minimal hardscaping and maximum biomass. Starting from scratch meant balancing our immediate wants (texture, fragrance, rain capture, food for our insect and bird relatives) with future use and purpose (restoration, shade trees, deep roots). Each season has brought new discoveries, which are always followed by more questions; the most important being: how tall will my son see our blue oak grow?
