The goal was to evoke a peaceful stroll through the local foothills in Santa Monica, while providing essential habitat to native birds and pollinators. I wanted to create a communal space in this courtyard complex, where regular onsite maintenance isn’t a given. Hyper-local natives that could flourish with minimal pruning, water, and upkeep were a priority. Hopefully, this courtyard garden will inspire other property owners to ditch their turf for native plants, bringing people closer to the natural beauty and biodiversity of Southern California.
