About the Garden

Glass Island is a 2-acre residence, an agroecological teaching garden and orchard, situated on top of an off-the-grid hill overlooking Los Angeles. In 2018 the homeowners contracted Fruitstitute, a fruit tree care and education service for backyard growers, to design, develop and grow a landscape for the future on a barren hilltop. As part of this exchange, Fruitstitute uses the space as a worksite to train their staff in the art of pruning and fruit tree care and to produce EarthCake compost and MulchLove, products they use on their client’s fruit trees. The success of Glass Island is based off of key design principles that are the foundation of a regenerative land management practice.
