39-Jaster Garden

Our garden was a vast field of turf when we bought our house four years ago. Now, California native plants mingle with fruit trees. A gently curving swale runs the entire length of the garden, while a sunsail over the seating area and a native grass meadow invite us to spend time outside. We worked with landscape architect Lucy O’Leary who designed the beautiful concept. We performed all manual labor ourselves: removing lawn and concrete, digging swales, installing the greywater (which routes washer and shower water to the trees), mulching, planting, hauling rocks, and pouring decomposed granite. We often still pause in disbelief of the complete transformation we achieved.
